Luxury vinyl flooring is a popular choice for many homeowners, and there are many reasons why. Maybe you’re considering it yourself. Let’s look at some of its characteristics.

You may have heard the terms LVP and LVT. Both types are luxury vinyl flooring, so they share similar characteristics. The difference between the two is the shape of the individual pieces. Luxury Vinyl Tile or LVT is square-shaped like tile, and Luxury Vinyl Plank or LVP is like a wood plank to resemble hardwood flooring.

If you want to add flooring that looks similar to real wood, LVP is the right choice because of its shape. LVT, on the other hand, can resemble real wood, concrete or stone; but it will look like square tile pieces. It just depends on the look you want to achieve.

What are some of the advantages of luxury vinyl flooring? Both LVP and LVT can be installed over existing flooring, which is known as floating. This makes the installation process easier and quicker.

Other advantages are related to its durability. Luxury vinyl flooring is stain-resistant and is also resistant to other types of damage like chipping and cracking. These qualities make this type of flooring an excellent choice for high-traffic areas.

Please note that luxury vinyl flooring is waterproof; however, if your home sustains flooding, it may need to be replaced because it’s not designed to be immersed in water for extended periods of time. This is true for most types of flooring.

One disadvantage of luxury vinyl flooring is that it can’t be repaired, so damaged LVP or LVT will need to be replaced. Other disadvantages include possible fading when exposed to direct sunlight for several years; and, even though it’s considered durable and scratch- and dent-resistant, heavier objects like appliances can dent or scratch it.
